what about on the green? let's not get ahead of ourselves. oh!!! jim: please come back, nick.
6:31 pm
nick: no. i am back here. more important things to do. jim: over to two. >> steve marino up the hill for his birdie at the second. playing on a major medical extension this season. he played six times last year. he has been flying by the edge on a number of occasions today. that was a bonus coming from the rough with his second. his caddie there, a little low five. let's go to the third. jim: and nick watney. nick: ok. different hole location. it has been left for the three days. for the two days that they play it. now they have it in the front right-hand corner. here she comes. jim: starting to crawl back a little bit. nick: keep looking. it is coming. jim: tiger is in the clear there
6:32 pm
over at two. >> yeah. he is just in the semi rough wherever that is. the sixth, i believe. there is nothing really, spectator mounds and some pine trees there, but no real problem. >> while tiger waits, erik compton with his second putt for the par. straight to the middle. good 2-putt from long-range for erik compton. disappointing bogey at the start though. back to 8-under. >> brad fritsch is last to putt for his par. 9-iron from 135, by the hole to this point. biggest thing for tiger is getting a yardage from over there.
6:33 pm
>> actually he is walking up to the green right now. the mark of a really good caddie. >> li have this with my trapezoid and g.p.s. all of the other things, i got it at 135. >> while we wait to see how close joe gets it. >> plus or minus 20. >> but with his experience i think he will be within a couple for sure. >> yeah. joe will have it right. >> it is amazing how you are used to pacing the yardages. looked pretty much spot on. these guys will be able to guess the yardage by looking at the flag within five yards every time. >> why do you think that we can't use the laser g.p.s.? save a lot of time here?
6:34 pm
>> it certainly would. i would like that think it be introduced. just walk up to your ball, shoot the number and go. i think it would save a lot of time during an 18-hole round. >> well, let's see if he comes up eight yards short. pitching wedge. into and off of the right. a kind of nice wind to help him get at this flag.
6:35 pm
in the back left. that tree is no problem in front that tree is no problem in front of him. >> your laser was right. >> about 10 yards short. >> i still think joe was right to be honest. >> just a little more breeze blowing up over the bluff there. >> cool breeze too today, as we go to three. jim: nick watney with a birdie putt. needs something like this to really get things going. he has done it. watney with a birdie.
6:36 pm
his second through the first three holes. aerial coverage being brought to you by good year. i am starting to nblet red shirt theory of yours, nick. >> and the demons sitting on his shoulder. jim: those first three names all have won this event in the past. tiger of course six times. snedeker, a year ago. watney, 2009. brandt is over there at the 10th hole, often another scoring opportunity. let's go back to two. >> well, steve marino getting
6:37 pm
ready to hit off of three tee. tiger will wait for him. about 186 yards, 6-iron down the hill into the breeze. it is all about trajectory here. nick: you have to make sure the man-made pigeons out there do not get in his line. here they come. jim: what a kick. yeah. nick: he flighted that beautifully. he kept it down. jim: let's go back to two. nick: there is enough going on on this one, ian. jim: it is not a good lie. >> he had to throw it up high with a lob wedge.
6:38 pm
brilliant indeed, nick. beautiful shot. nick: yeah. that really was. >> that was a beautiful shot. >> yes. that ball really was nestled down in here. he will play it like a bunker shot, slide across it. that ball pops straight up in the air. notice how the clubface stays open. increases the lost as much as you can. over to three. jim: fritsch. >> also going with a 6-iron. also fighting it down. he has hung it out a little bit to the right. nick: that was a little bit short. it is short anyways. that one still pointing at the sky, that clubhead. >> lhe missed a couple to the left. you know what happens after that. nick: yeah. it is all about reactions.
6:39 pm
>> next to play erik compton and going with the 6-iron. jim: going off across that bay. that is the village of la jolla. there is not anything good over there. nick: not a good signal. hope that is in the short grass. the breeze is just picking up enough now. jim: let's move ahead to the 10th. >> this little dogleg to the left par 4. brandt is in good position. hole is cut way in the back. don't want to go over.
6:40 pm
most of the guys will come up about 20 feet short. can't hit this one long. that will be nice uphill putt there to go 5-under for the day. if he did bird te, it would get him to 12-under and only two back. let's go back to two. >> tiger faces another one of those little putts that you really have to give your complete respect to. >> here and pebble beach, the two hardest places to hole out on the pga tour. >> beautiful view from here. >> it is not a science, putting on these greens especially. a little bumpy and wiggley. he was very happy to knock that one in. you see him joking there with
6:41 pm
billy horschel. that was not an easy little putt. world rankings on the side there. tiger second behind rory mcilroy. 4.2 points behind. quite a good lead there for rory. snedeker, no stranger to low scores around the south course here at torrey pines. he is three back of tiger woods at the moment. beautifully on a very difficult hole. that was 201 yards this morning and it was pretty cold and damp conditions. now we have sunshine and breeze to deal with david feherty. >> yeah. and he has had to look at it for 10 minutes as well. there is that infinity edge at the back there. there is a little movement in his line to the short right of the green. that looks like a wonderful spot. nick: i think if you nail it on the front right-hand corner. if you pull it into the middle of the green it will kick back towards the flag. but right now maybe just enough going on in tiger's mind that it is not as easy as it looks >> 6-iron. he made a very nice swing. nick: he sure did. drilled that one in there
